Accident/ Incident Databases and Documents

FAA Office of Aviation Safety - Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS)

FAA Accident/ Incident Data System (AIDS): The Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS) database contains data records for general aviation and commercial air carrier incidents since 1978. The NASDAC database for AIDS contains incidents only because NASDAC uses the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident database as the primary source for accident information. The information contained in AIDS is gathered from several sources including incident reports on FAA Form 8020-5.

Air Registry (AR): The FAA aircraft registry is a data system used to record and track civil aircraft registered in the United States. Registration occurs at the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City where the appropriate information is obtained and recorded from the aircraft purchaser. The database is updated in real time as the registry staff obtain and enter the data into the data system. The Registry maintains the permanent records of over 320,000 active civil aircraft and provides approximately 700 copies of aircraft records daily for review to users of the Public Documents Room located in the Registry Building at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS): The Aviation Safety Report System (ASRS) receives, processes, and analyzes reports of unsafe occurrences and hazardous situations that are voluntarily submitted by pilots, air traffic controllers, and others. Information collected by the ASRS is used to identify hazards and safety discrepancies in the National Airspace System. It is also used to formulate policy and to strengthen the foundation of aviation human factors safety research.

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS): The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) database contains traffic and capacity statistics on individual Air Carrier operations. BTS is an administration under the Department of Transportation (DOT), at a similar organizational level as the FAA. During the 1970s, when the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) was disestablished, the CAB Bureau of Accounts and Statistics came to be what is now the BTS office of Airline Statistics.

Near Midair Collision System (NMACS): The Near Midair Collision System (NMACS) database is used to record reports of in flight incidents where two aircraft have closed to an unsafe distance and avoided an actual collision.

FAA Office of Accident Investigation Preliminary Accident and Incident Data: This page provides access to preliminary accident and incident data that has been received at the Office of Accident Investigation during the last 10 business days

FAA Office of Accident Investigation Documents: PDF of FAA documents available. Including - "Aircraft Accident and Incident Notification, Investigation, and Report" 8020.11B; "FAA Procedures for Handling NTSB Recommendations -Order 1220.2F)

    Aviation Accident Database (from NTSB)

    Aviation Maintenance Alerts (from FAA)

NTSB Aviation Accident and Incident Data System: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Aviation Accident and Incident Data System contains information collected during an NTSB investigation of an accident or incident involving civil aircraft within the United States, its territories and possessions, and in international waters. The NTSB Board is an independent Federal agency that investigates every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in the other modes of transportation, conducts special investigations and safety studies, and issues safety recommendations to prevent future accidents.

NTSB Safety Recommendations to the FAA with FAA Responses: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) uses the information it gathers during accident investigations and the determination of probable cause to make safety recommendations to all elements of the transportation industry. While the recipient of a recommendation does not have to implement the proposed action, it does have to respond formally to the recommendation and specify what action is or is not being taken and why. This database contains the NTSB recommendations to the FAA and the FAA responses.

World Aircraft Accident Summary (WAAS): The World Aircraft Accident Summary (WAAS) produced on behalf of the British Civil Aviation Authority, by Airclaims Limited, provides brief details of all known major operational accidents involving air carriers operating jet and turboprop aircraft and helicopters and the larger piston-engined types worldwide.

Historical Aircraft Accident Reports (1934-1965) from DOT's Online Digital Special Collections

Advisory Circulars
Advisory Circulars are FAA's means of providing non-regulatory guidance to the public. Order 1320.46C governs FAA's development of Advisory Circulars.

    Complete list of all ACs

Draft Advisory Circulars (from FAA): This database is a searchable repository of certain aviation safety DRAFT Advisory Circulars (ACs). You can view the draft ACs that are currently open for public comment and those that are closed for comment but are still pending final action. For each draft AC, you can view a pdf copy or a full-text version.

Regulation & Certification Advisory Circulars: This database is a searchable repository of all aviation safety Advisory Circulars (ACs). You can look at the most current ACs by their AC Number, or Part Number. It is also possible to view historical AC information to see old or cancelled ACs. For each AC, you can view a pdf copy.

Aircraft Certification Orders & Notices from the FAA: This database is a searchable repository of all Aircraft Certification Service Orders and Notices. An Order/Notice is a directive that the FAA uses to issue policy, instructions and work information to its own personnel and designees. It spells out how the FAA expects to carry out its responsibilities. You can look at the most current Orders sorted by their number or effective date. It is also possible to view historical Order information to see old or cancelled Orders. You can also look at the most current Notices sorted by their number or cancellation date. It is also possible to view cancelled Notices information by their number or cancellation date. For each Order/Notice, you can view a pdf copy and a full-text version.

Supplementary Type Certificates (STC): FAA's main resource for the STC program. Includes a information on the registration of a new STC, STC search, faq, and overview of the format of STC's in their database. A Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) is a document issued by the Federal Aviation Administration approving a product (aircraft, engine, or propeller) modification. The STC defines the product design change, states how the modification affects the existing type design, and lists serial number effectively. It also identifies the certification basis listing specific regulatory compliance for the design change. Information contained in the certification basis is helpful for those applicants proposing subsequent product modifications and evaluating certification basis compatibility with other STC modifications.

Technical Standard Orders (TSO): A Technical Standard Order (TSO) is a minimum performance standard issued by the Administrator for specified materials, parts, processes, and appliances used on civil aircraft. TSOs can be viewed by Current, Active Historical, Proposed, or Canceled. Current TSOs are the approved FAA performance standard that the applicant must use to receive a TSO authorization. Active Historical TSOs are for previously approved TSO authorizations. Proposed TSOs are new, draft requirements issued for public comment. Canceled TSOs are for reference only.

Type Certificate Data Sheets (TCDS): The Type Certificate Data Sheets (TCDS) database is a repository of Make and Model information. The TCDS is a formal description of the aircraft, engine or propeller. It lists limitations and information required for type certification including airspeed limits, weight limits, thrust limitations, etc. TCDS documents are available from the initial implementation of this database (April 1999) forward. Historical documents prior to implementation are not necessarily included in this database; however, historical information will be retained as additional documents and revisions to documents are incorporated into the database.
