Business Classification Codes

    NAICS Codes: North American Industry Classification System (database covers 1997- current); code is more specific and therefore have replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes of 1987.

    SIC Codes: Search the 1987 version Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) manual, a classification system that classifies products and services (via OSHA DOL database)

    Better Business Bureau (BBB)

    Business & Company Resource Center: Includes company profiles, executives, mergers & acquisitions, ticker symbols, news & magazine articles, company histories and chronologies, financials, balance sheets, financial ratios, rankings, suits & claims (for civil claims suits in the area of Human Resources only), products & brands, industry overviews and associations. Covers 1980- to present. Subjects covered include finance, acquisitions & mergers, international trade, money management, new technologies & products, local & regional business trends, investments and banking. Available through the New York Public Library's Web site if you have a NYPL library card.

    Business Source Premier (EBSCO): Full text for over 2,470 scholarly business journals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, etc. Available through the New York Public Library's Web site if you have a NYPL library card.

    Dun & Bradstreet: Offers information on over 62 million businesses in over 200 countries; each company is assigned a 9-digit D-U-N-S number which serves as a unique identifier.

    EBSCOhost: Includes the following databases: Academic Search Premier, Alt-HealthWatch, Business Source Premier, ERIC, Health Source Consumer Edition, Health Source, Masterfile Premier, Middle Search Plus, Newspaper Source, Novelist, Primary Search, Professional Development Collection, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, Religion & Philosophy Collection, TOPICsearch, and more. Available through the New York Public Library's Web site if you have a NYPL library card.

    Hoover's Online: Database of comprehensive company, industry, and market intelligence information that is searchable by company name, ticker, keyword, executive name, etc.  Some portions of the site are free to the general public while other portions that are denoted with a platinum key are subscription-based only.

    MasterFILE Premier (EBSCO): MasterFILE Premier provides full text for over 1,800 general interest, business, consumer health, general science, and multicultural periodicals. In addition, this database offers indexing and abstracts for over 2,500 periodicals. Available through the New York Public Library's Web site if you have a NYPL library card.

    Regional Business News: Provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. Available through the New York Public Library's Web site if you have a NYPL library card.

    Thomas Register: Covers approximately 170,000 manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada and their products and services.

International Company Research

    Company Annual Reports Online (CAROL) World: Free (with registration) database of online corporate information including annual reports for companies in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Links to stocks by country, financials, etc.

    Europages: European business directory searchable by product/service or company name and browsable by activity/sector. Links to company websites.

    SEDAR: SEDAR is Canada's electronic database for public companies. Files date back to 1997 with separate databases for company profiles.

    Site-by-Site.com: This site provides links to stock exchanges in the U.S. and around the world.  There are links to profiles of over 12,000 companies worldwide available from button links to Wright Investors' Services.

    Thomas Global Register: Directory of global manufacturers and distributors that provides detailed product and company information in the major industrialized countries.
