News & Events


    Stephen Stegich and Rod Margo will be speaking at the upcoming 2nd Annual Euromoney AirLaw Conference on May 28, 2008. Stephen will participate in a panel discussion on the EU environmental policy and its Carbon Dioxide Emissions Trade Scheme. Rod will be speaking on the topic of dispute resolution and negotiation.

    Jonathan DeMay presented "Recent Developments in Aviation Law" at the SMU Air Law Symposium in Dallas, Texas on February 21, 2008.

    Stephen Stegich was a speaker at the 16th Annual Aero-Engine Cost Management Conference in San Antonio, Texas on February 7, 2008. He spoke and presented a paper ("The EU Emissions Trading Scheme and Aviation") and a powerpoint presentation. Steve discussed how and when the emissions trade scheme is likely to be implemented and what will be its repercussions upon the commercial aviation industry.

    Michael Holland spoke at the Henry Lee School of Forensic Studies at the University of New Haven on jury selection in civil and criminal cases. The presentation was made to graduate students training for careers in forensic sciences.

    The 2007 Chambers USA Client's Guide, published by Chambers & Partners, Legal Publishers, gave Condon & Forsyth LLP its highest ranking among aviation litigation lawyers in the United States, stating that "'The senior partners have the most experience in the world in terms of major loss and catastrophe handling for airlines as it impacts upon the USA and US passengers.' The lawyers are 'very seasoned, experienced and practical performers,' and 'the quality of work throughout has always been at the highest end of the market.'" Two of the firm's partners, Des Barry and Rod Margo, also were given Chambers' highest individual ranking for transportation lawyers.

    Scott Cunningham and Richard Lazenby were selected as 2007 Southern California Super Lawyers - Rising Stars.

    Five Condon & Forsyth LLP partners have been selected by Legal 500, a guide to commercial law firms in the U.S., for their work in Insurance and Reinsurance, Product Liability and Mass Tort Defense. In its volume focusing on litigation, the Legal 500 U.S. rankings recognized Desmond Barry, Rod Margo, Katherine Posner, Frank Silane and Stephen Stegich.

    Chris Christensen, Co-Chair of the Aviation Committee of the ABA Section of Litigation, acted as Master of Ceremonies for the ABA Annual Committee Seminar, held June 1, 2007, in New York. Kathy Posner moderated a panel of speakers on Critical Issues in Aviation Insurance and Insured Litigation at the Seminar, which had over 175 attendees.

    Kathy Posner has become co-chair of the International Aviation Women's Association's newly formed Sponsorship Committee. Kathy is a Past President of IAWA and a member of the IAWA Advisory Board.

    Jean Rose spoke and presented a paper on behalf of Christopher Christensen entitled "Striking a Balance Between Aviation Security and Civil Rights -- A survey of aviation related discrimination cases post September 11, 2001" at the 41st Annual Southern Methodist University School of Law Air Law Symposium on February 22, 2007.

    Scott Cunningham spoke on environmental litigation under California's Proposition 65 at the 2007 IATA Legal Symposium which was held in Istanbul, Turkey, from February 12-14, 2007. Scott also presented the tenth volume of the IATA Liability Reporter.

    Kathy Posner and Anthony Battista spoke at the Airfinance Journal Air Law Conference, February 6-7, 2007 in London, England. Kathy lead a panel discussion on current aviation insurance issues and Anthony spoke on fractional ownership of aircraft.

    Des Barry testified before the Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure of the Judicial Conference of the United States in support of proposed Federal Rule of Evidence 502 dealing with waiver of the attorney-client and work product privileges.

    Des Barry, was a member of the Masters of Law Series Panel at the American Bar Association’s 2006 TIPS Aviation and Space Law Committee conference, On the Horizon: Securing Safety, Insuring Fully and Litigating Fairly, discussing changes in the practice of aviation litigation during the past thirty years and projecting what the future holds for this specialty. The conference was held at the Ritz Carlton in Washington D.C. on October 26th and 27th.

    Our partner Mike Holland gave a one day aviation seminar to fifty members of the TACA Group in El Salvador. The topics covered by Mike during the day long seminar included the Family Assistance Act requirements and practical tips on handling claims arising out of a major accident, a comparison of the Warsaw and Montreal Conventions, recent developments in aviation security, prevention of revenue loss through ticket fraud, dealing with the rights of disabled passengers, proactive policies of the airline to avoid discrimination claims and aircraft leasing and insurance issues.

    Mike also participated, with several other attorneys from Central and South America, at a one day seminar held by COPA Airlines in Paraná. Mike's topic was the international legal liability regime and a comparison of the Warsaw and Montreal Conventions.

    Des Barry, Michael J. Holland, Rod Margo, and Katherine B. Posner were all nominated to be listed in the latest edition of Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Aviation Lawyers, a listing of prominent aviation attorneys throughout the world.

    In June 2006 Frank A. Silane was a speaker on a panel which took an in depth look at aviation security requirements and their impact on the industry in terms of dollars, convenience and personal freedoms. The panel, moderated by Anthony U. Battista, addressed the members of the Association of Transportation Law Professionals at their 77th Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

    Anthony U. Battista spoke and presented a paper entitled "Recent Legal Developments in Aviation Law" at the 77th Annual Meeting of the Association of Transportation Law Professionals held in Seattle, Washington on June 14, 2006.

    Kathy Posner received the New York Women's Bar Association's (NYWBA) Doris S. Hoffman Service Award at the NYWBA's Annual Dinner on May 24, 2006. This award, named for a much admired former president of the NYWBA, is bestowed solely when the NYWBA Board of Directors decides that the recipient has rendered exceptional service to the organization and has been given only five times since its inception.

    In May 2006, John D. Horenstein spoke at the Transportation Lawyers Association annual conference and mid-year meeting of the Canadian Transport Lawyers Association in Orlando, Florida. This multi-modal panel addressed environmental spill issues including civil, criminal and environmental liability, insurance coverage and involved a complex hypothetical accident scenario. John spoke on hazardous material regulations for commercial and cargo air carriers and the criminalization of negligence in aviation law.

    On April 3, 2006 Rod Margo moderated a panel on Enterprise Risk Management at the IATA Insurance and Risk Management Conference in Bangkok, Thailand. Thereafter, he presented a paper on 'Aviation Insurance at the Margins' at the 25th annual conference of the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand held in Auckland, New Zealand, on April 6-7, 2006.

    Des Barry and Marshall Turner participated as faculty members at the American Bar Association's National Trial Academy held at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada March 11-15, 2006. The Trial Academy is co-sponsored by the American Board of Trial Advocates and offers a unique, interactive program designed to teach young lawyers trial advocacy skills.

    Mike Holland recently gave a one day aviation law seminar to a group of 50 airline employees and aviation insurers in Bogotá, Colombia on February 25, 2006. The topics covered during the seminar included aircraft insurance and leasing, fair practices in the workplace, compliance with U.S. tax regulations, recent developments in aviation security, and international legal liability under the Warsaw Convention and Montreal Convention.

    Rod Margo spoke on recent developments in DVT litigation at the 2006 IATA Legal Symposium which was held in Hong Kong from February 12-14, 2006. Rod also presented the ninth volume of the IATA Liability Reporter.
